Judge Kwan has been described as a true visionary, a fierce advocate for justice, peace and equity, a moral leader, a mentor, and a very kind and gentle soul who treated everyone he encountered with respect and dignity. His amazing optimism was reflected in the many leadership positions he assumed with his personal mantra – “ There is nothing we can’t fix, If we fail or fall, we get back up and do it again”.
On May 8, 2023, at the MidValley Performing Theatre in the late Judge Kwan’s district, a poignant gathering that drew hundreds to honor his enduring legacy. Among the seats were colleagues, friends, family, and fellow jurists assembled, sharing stories that illuminated how his profound contributions had resonated far beyond the courtroom, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to justice fused with compassion. Through heartfelt speeches, laughter, and tears, his vibrant spirit was palpable in the photographs adorning the venue, capturing the essence of his humility and dedication. The event transcended mourning, morphing into a celebration of how Judge Michael Wei Kwan’s wisdom and integrity had indelibly shaped the community in Utah and the nation, an eternal light guiding all those touched by his extraordinary presence.
